Pay up or else.

The environment debate, and I use the word debate in its loosest form, has become rather like the so called “war on terror”. That is to say, you can’t really question the government over with it without being accused of being some sort of self-serving monster that has no interest in the well being of the world and its people. As a result, the government (and opposition parties) are not only trying to out “green” each other, but they are cynically using climate change to impose “big brother” like regulation and also use it as an unquestionable form of taxation or method of raising money for Treasury’s deep, deep pockets.

The latest idea is extending the driving test to include questions on the environmental impact of cars when sitting their theory exams. The multiple choice test will increase from 35 to 50 questions to allow candidates to be examined on their knowledge of “eco-driving” techniques for reducing fuel consumption and harmful emissions. And guess what? The cost of the test will increase from £21.50 to £28.50.

I understand that inflation causes the costs of goods and services to rise (though this does seem an extreme inflation busting rise by anyone’s standards) but please stop treating us like idiots. It’s no coincidence the government wants less drivers on the road, needs to raise more money for its tax and spend plans and wants to win voters by “out-greening” Mr Green himself, David Cameron. It has nothing to do with saving the world and everything to do with money and votes, so please stop playing the electorate for the fool and tell the truth. Is that really too much to ask..?
